The Third Age: the Lord of the Rings [Recent Events]

While instant messaging (IM) has become insanely popular in the consumer market, and is starting to catch fire in the corporate arena (related story), Internet marketers have only had some success in using the relatively new medium to distribute their messages.

One of the exceptions is ActiveBuddy’s use of interactive agents to promote rock bands, baseball and even its own information offerings (related story).

Another exception has come through in the form of the company that many love to hate, but you always admit it has a knack for marketing: America Online.

Now, both companies are working to promote the first film in New Line Cinema’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which opens in theaters on Dec. 19.
